Extra Care housing is a new and unique way of enabling older couples to continue to maintain their close relationships, in spite of ill health and increasing support needs. Here, we answer some Frequently Asked Questions about Extra Care.

Can couples or two family members/close friends be cared for in Extra Care schemes? If so, what are the charges?

  • Yes. You will need a social work assessment. Only one amount of rent and service charge is payable per flat.
  • However, if both members of the couple need care and support then support charges and attendance allowance must be paid by both persons.
  • Please note that if only one person is receiving care and support, the independent person may be eligible for Invalid Carers Allowance (link)

Do I continue to pay charges if I am in hospital?

  • Rent, service and support charges continue throughout your stay and will be covered by benefit is eligible.
  • Attendance allowance is only payable to us for 4 weeks - it stops automatically anyway after 4 weeks hospital stay
  • Please ensure that any direct debits are amended if you are admitted to hospital.
